Krakow - Balice

John Paul II International Airport Kraków-Balice, also called Krakow Airport (IATA: KRK, ICAO: EPKK) is situated 11 km to the west from the centre of Krakow, in Balice. It is the only airport in Poland with a fast, direct railway link with the centre of the historical capital of Poland. The aerodrome is also used by a military unit.

The airport has one concrete, 2550m long, runway, with a threshold displaced by 300 meters for runway 25 arrivals. The runway is 60 m wide. It is equipped with ILS category I for runway 25 arrivals. The airport operates 24 hours per day, however, visual approaches are not permitted after dark.

At the moment it is the second largest airport in Poland, after Frederick Chopin airport in Warsaw, taking into account the passenger throughput and the volume of aircraft operations. Krakow airport handles around 3 million passengers per year, and the air traffic is 80 operations per day on average. The former military aerodrome in Balice was first used for civilian aviation in 1964. Ever since the civilian part of airport has been expanding on continuous basis, now outnumbering military operations by far. Further development of its infrastructure is planned within the next few years. The plans include the extension of the international terminal and aprons to reach the capacity of up to 9 million passengers per year.

The name of John Paul II was ascribed to Krakow Airport in 1995. The Pope himself visited the airport quite frequently while on his 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 6th, 7th and 8th pilgrimage to Poland.
